Very glad that you’re all okay. Have a look at Fogos.pt for updates on fires across Portugal. A simple site but gives good info and alerts on each reported fire. Hope that you’re out of immediate danger now that the perimeters of the fire have been contained.
We live on the Silver Coast near Caldas da Rainha and have watched several fires from our eyrie. It is sobering to watch but also be thankful for the efforts of the Bombeiros who as you say are mostly volunteers. I had read there had been concerns raised about inter-agency communication which are/were being addressed....? However, thankfully you are all safe 👍 Thanks for the NASA link, downloaded the app. All the best.
Thanks Peter...it was a worrisome few days, but this year we were fortunate. It was a much bigger fire though and a lot of people in the region were affected. All the best, Al
Very glad you're okay, Alastair. Our old friends in Corfu had a close thing with the fires in the mountains there, too. Is it possible for God to look after you while also scaring you silly? Goats is a great idea and I can see a Goat Fund Me working really well. Stay safe, and I owe you a longer note about your dark night of the soul. From hero to zero, as my old boss so helpfully said to me!
The fires ripping through southern Europe this year have been a very real concern, so much so I am selling up and moving to Ireland. Like Portugal, we get wildfires every year in Cyprus, and some have been close to where I live, not devastatingly so and not of the size to garner much attention, but it has always felt like a threat nonetheless. As far as the house is concerned, property is property, and the dogs I can bundle in the car. But the horses? At the stables where I am, there are 60. There would be no alternative but to turn them loose and hope for the best. So, that's why I am leaving. The house goes on the market next week. xx

You painted the picture so well. I decided to listen rather than read your update. Stay safe and vigilant!
OK Many thanks Sorry until just now the site just showed blocked due physhing danger. Now ok
🤞
Glad you are safe. Thanks for sharing the NASA tool.
You’re right Larry - our cork oaks bounced back very well but the eucalyptus are a problem…especIally when they’re left to finalise and create thick, dry tinder for fires to rage through. I saw this last night which might be of interest: https://www.portugalresident.com/citizens-mobilize-against-giant-risk-of-eucalyptus-threatening-portugals-forests/

I hope everything has now calmed down for you, it must have been a nightmare.
