I love stories of internet rabbit holes, I find myself doing it every day. Usually interesting, never boring.

Roger Crawley’s ‘The Conquerers’ is also well worth a read if you haven’t read it yet.

Loved this. Primarily because I know exactly where you are talking about having been sent by HMG ( with a small number of friends) to monitor the ceasefire between the Polisario and Morocco. I have a war story too from those days - when we had done our time in quite the worst unsupported conditions I have experienced, my friends were pushing me to lobby HMG to get us home. I arranged a dodgy phone patch by HF radio ( in my land rover) to UK only be told to wait for a higher priority call - on comes PM John Major calling Terry Waite just lifting out of Beirut having been held hostage. I listened for a bit then hung up it seemed a bit churlish to be complaining about our 6 months in the desert! The lads weren’t quite so impressed with me chickening out.

Fantastic John - what a great story and I can only imagine the nuance behind the phrase "quite the worst unsupported conditions"! You are writing I book soon I trust?

I’m not very commercially minded so Colin Freeman is writing the hostage story - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea comes out 11 Sep on Amazon.

My copy arrived and I devoured it in two evenings. What a story and massive credit to you and the rest of your team for your achievements. Few people get the chance to say they have really made a difference to others’ lives but you definitely did. 🦸‍♂️ Hope your health remains good.
