Sometimes High Cholesterol, can be in the Genes. Pre Triple Heart Bypass, I always thought I was a Healthy individual, however I soon learnt there is always an alternative. I eat mainly Veg, Fish and Plant Based food now, taken with Red Wine at the Weekend. You might not be able to avoid the Statins and Aspirin for long. Good luck on your new Journey Alastair.
So sorry for your cholesterol worries. I have familial high cholesterol and was advised to take stains. Most everyone I I knew on statins had muscle aches, developed diabetes and some had depression. No thank you. I read wheat belly and followed suit. No change. More workouts - nada. Low fat - nothing. After watching this documentary 2.5 years ago I stopped eating meat and eat mostly plant based diet. I still have some cheese and occasional fish. My cholesterol dropped for the first time. I wish you and your wife good health and happiness. https://youtu.be/O7ijukNzlUg
Wow...thanks for the tip...we'll see how it goes. I got some scales this week and the target is to lose 7.5kgs by the summer...and then see where that leaves me...I better get out with the strimmer, jogging with the dogs...and to have a lot more vegetables! Dr Gertrud also told me: "We use a picture of a plate which is half filled with vegetables, the remaining half with potatoes/rice/pasta/dinkel and meats/egg/fish." so your advice sounds spot on!
You can do it! I plan to book a stay at your personal paradise one day. When I arrive you can reminisce about your 2022 cholesterol scare over a beautiful plate of delicious vegetables.
Thanks for another good read, Alastair, and good luck with the health kick. Those of us immigrants to Portugal who are also in the warning areas on cholestrol / weight issues need the periodic dig in the ribs that exercise costs nothing and pleasurable eating/ drinking need not be excessive given the right miind set. I was going to get brie pate and Douro to accompany watching the rugby tomorrow but maybe, following your briefing, I will compose a substitute menu! Hope the building goes well!
Oh no! Please don't let me ruin the rugby for you...I still haven't decided which route I'm going to go on that front tomorrow! Perhaps switching Sagres/IPA for an Alentejo red - I wonder which is better?...hmm...perhaps I'll Google that...!
Trouble is that if you go for the beer with the rigby, how can you not then have the tinto later? Have you yet come across two Alentejo gems produced by my friend Phillip Mollet at Herdade da Maroteira? www.maroteira.com. It is in Redondo - around 35 minutes from Evora. Postal Code is 7170-120.
We stayed in one of their cottages on their lovely cork estate some years ago and were smitten by both Cem Reis (which is fiendishly expensive yet sublime) and Dez Testoes which is less expensive but no less memorable. We have since visited again and also had them (very reasonably) ship some to us. Anthony Doody is the Head of Sales but by all means contact Phillip who would I am sure given you a warm welcome. Phillip is on Facebook but is also phillipmollet@gmail.com. P
Fantastic Peter - thanks very much for that tip and contact...I'll check them out...we're currently researching and choosing another seven vineyards to visit in Alentejo for our podcast...trying to tell some history and geography and blend it all together with us learning a load of new skills. I'll throw it in the mix. Thanks a lot a enjoy the match!
